During a fierce storm, the plane is blown off-course and ultimately crashes into the ocean. Noland is the only survivor, and is washed ashore on a small island. The bulk of the film deals with his many travails, from gathering food and water to the mental challenges of living alone for years. His primary goal is to build a raft strong enough to cross the coral reef surrounding the island, but local materials are insufficient. He scavenges what he can from FedEx packages that wash ashore from the plane and tries to remain mentally stable. After four years of isolation, a large piece of plastic debris -- strong enough to act as a sail -- washes ashore. Noland is able to build a raft made of palm trees, video tape (acting as rope to hold it together), and other materials and with the help of his new sail, escapes the island. He is eventually rescued by a passing ship.
Returning home, he finds that his fiancee has married, and he has to begin his life anew. Out of all the FedEx packages that washed ashore from the downed jet, he kept one unopened and intact. This last package he delivers at the end of the film, though we never find out what it contains.
Wow, this movie is great. Tom Hanks's acting is good. I can feel his character's (Chuck) emotions. I even cried! :D What Chuck does in this movie reminded me of early year of mankind history. Chuck's effort to survive and stay alive. Start living in cave and hunting for foods. Slowly he learn to manage to have own home and field. His first effort to make fire and hunting for foods are funny to see but also sad. You'll love the adventure he has. Feel his desperate feeling and attempt of suicide.
Good movie for me is a story that can moved your heart and left good lesson in life, aside of technical things like photography or its special effect technology of course. And this movie is in my criteria for good movie.
What will you do if u stranded in the middle of no where... In place you have never been to... and you are ALONE! What would you do? Can you survive? Can you keep your hope that someday you'll return home and be together once again with your loved one? Can you prepare for the worse... losing life you once have... losing evertyhing...
This movie will makes you wonder and think how blessed you are with what you have. Life is about accepting and move on after you lose the battle. But don't worry, coz life also offers you another oportunities, possibilities to have other beautiful life, as long as you keep your hope and spirit high.
Enjoy the movie. Peace, (^_^)v
Chuck Noland: We both had done the math. Kelly added it all up and... knew she had to let me go. I added it up, and knew that I had... lost her. 'cos I was never gonna get off that island. I was gonna die there, totally alone. I was gonna get sick, or get injured or something. The only choice I had, the only thing I could control was when, and how, and where it was going to happen. So... I made a rope and I went up to the summit, to hang myself. I had to test it, you know? Of course. You know me. And the weight of the log, snapped the limb of the tree, so I-I - , I couldn't even kill myself the way I wanted to. I had power over *nothing*. And that's when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket. I knew, somehow, that I had to stay alive. Somehow. I had to keep breathing. Even though there was no reason to hope. And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that's what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing. And one day my logic was proven all wrong because the tide came in, and gave me a sail. And now, here I am. I'm back. In Memphis, talking to you. I have ice in my glass... And I've lost her all over again. I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly. But I'm so grateful that she was with me on that island. And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?
